I'm actually quite shocked that we don't have an all-encompassing Metal Gear Solid thread here on the board, so, well, I'm creating it. Let's discuss the games here and our experience with them.
I got into Metal Gear Solid 1 when Andy brought it over to my house and more or less played straight through it. I remember when he got stuck on Vulcan Raven and we spent at least an hour doing that battle over and over trying to kill him. Of course, as soon as possible I found a copy of the game (or maybe Andy got it for me, I don't recall now) and found out it was harder than it looked (Andy was so good at just breezing through it). But I really enjoyed it. I found the villains to be interesting and the plot to be captivating.
Then Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PS2 was announced. Soon a demo disc was released and Andy got his hands on it. It was in Japanese, with English subtitles, and contained the first half of the tanker (up until Olga is defeated). Naturally I was happy. I'm pretty sure I bought a PS2 for the sole purpose of playing this game. When the game was released I ran and bought a copy and entered a week of doing nothing else. I must have played the crap out of that game. Despite that, though, I never could beat it on expert mode.
I never got around to getting and playing any of the other games (MGS3 and the PSP games, mainly since I don't own an PSP). So I can't really comment on those. I know MGS4 looks good but the PS3 is simply too expensive for me to get right now. So that one will have to wait awhile. And I've seen/played the GC version (Twin Snakes) but haven't found a copy for myself yet. Maybe one day.
Recently I bought Metal Gear Solid 2 in Japanese and have been slowly working on it. If you're wondering how it is in Japanese, here's a few video clips I captured:
Ocelot's First Appearance in MGS2
Raiden vs Fortune (after you deactivate the big/hidden bomb in strut A)
Fatman (both cutscenes with Fatman)
I've also been playing through the first game in Japanese but I don't have the capability of capturing any of it. *cough* it's on an emulator *cough* Maybe one day I'll actually beat it.
Does anyone remember any of the crazy things you can do in MGS2? It's been so long that I don't remember.
