I'm starting a playthrough of FFI on the Japanese Dawn of Souls rom, and I'm jotting down what was different from the English release. I was wondering what anyone here might want me to check out in detail.
I am NOT doing a full translation, or anything close to that. I'm just writing down things like "oh hey, Sleep is called 'Sleepel' here", and making note of it. The game's script is not one of such depth that we could have possibly missed something in translation^.^
Current Plans:
-DoS exclusive equipment
-Spell names; I know a few are prone to renaming when they translate FF titles, like Scan-Libra.
-Intro on the Bridge
-Chaos' Monologue
-Ending
-Some points where the literal translation was used(which I think will not be uncommon in a simpler script like this)
Fun Fact: I was "inspired" into doing this by an April Fool's joke, where I pretended to start an EPIC translation for FF I+II. Well, after a couple people thinking it was for real(I think...), and Iyouboushi himself gave me translation resources, I said CRAP. Then, shortly afterward, "I'll do database stuff"!
Disclaimer: It's not like I'll be doing anything more than switching the languages in a few parts.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, some nuances:
English Name-Japanese Name-Literal Translation
Warrior-Senshi-Warrior
Thief-Shiifu-Thief
Monk-Monku-Monk
White Mage-Shiromajutsushi-White Magician
Black Mage-Kuromajutsushi-Black Magician
Red Mage-Akamajutsushi-Red Magician
No surprises here...
Fun Fact: Monk and Thief were written in Katakana, meaning their Japanese names are...drumroll...
...Monk and Thief.
