The majority of my games that I have are RPGs, and the rest are fighting or action games. I believe I've had this game for quite some time (I think I got it not too long after I got Vagrent Story. I know I've seen the commercial for LoD). This game is four cds long.
At first the game starts off as you going to rescue someone, and surprise surprise, it ends up as you having to save the world pretty much (just like any other game).
The graphics on the game are pretty good for the PS1, but really isn't anything compared to other games out now. Some of the Dragoon armor designs are nice though (I like Rose's the most). There really isn't a lot of FMV's in this game as well.
Sound effects are alright, but nothing that you would remember. There is actually talking in some of the FMV's, but the FMV's don't look like what you would see in a PS1 FF game (I don't mind though). The music is pretty decent though, there are a lot of the tracks I like listening to.
Controls/gameplay are simple on the game. The attacks you perform have you press the X button at certain points, depending on how many hits it is. Sometimes your enemy will try to counter your attack (which then you have to press O, or it'll stop your current attack and you get thrown back and lose some HP). Not really recommended to play this if you're tired. You learn new additions at later levels, and there are some you can only learn after you use the other additions 99 times (only the times you finish them count, not when you goof up). I can pretty much do all of the additions, but I have insane amounts of trouble trying to do Lavitz's/Albert's additions . I was at some point having trouble with Rose's Demon's Dance addition, but I was able to do it finally last time I played. Also, if you cheat on this game, I recommend leaving your levels alone, since it's easier to level the additions along with your levels (or maybe it's just me?).
In Dragoon mode, you don't use additions, instead you have to charge up your attack. The gauge goes in a clock-wise fashion, and you have to push X at the right time. If you get it perfect, you do the full amount of hits. You also get Dragoon magic while in Dragoon mode. You basically learn a new one each time your Dragoon level goes up, except on Dragoon level 4 (5 is the highest). Also note that you can't use items, so beware (more can be learned in the game). Another thing, you have limited item space (32 spaces), so only keep what you need. Yet, you can have 255 weapons/armor/accessories...
Guarding gives you back 10% of your current max HP, so that's good, plus you're immune to status effects when you block (Also immune in Dragoon form, and if you turn into a Dragoon, if you have a status effect, it goes away).
Also, don't expect to see tons of gold/exp like in most other RPG's. You won't even break 10k gold by the end of the game, plus you don't get a lot of exp (level 60 is the max). It's a nice change for once, since I know basically any other RPG you get tons of exp and gold.
Overall it's a pretty decent game I think. Some of the dialog in the game is weird, but that's because of the translation (though I really don't know how the Japanese version is). The characters elements are painfully obvious, their clothes gives it away, so probably will make you think of the Power Rangers and such. Only chracter I really like the most would be Rose, probably because she is the Darkness Dragoon, plus she usually says "Die!" during her additions, heh. The game is worth checking out if you decide to play it.
