After spending a bit of time on this game I thought I should review it.
"Inuyasha: Kagome no Sengoku Yume Hiki"
The title screen. Not very impressive
The game came out for the Wonderswan Color in November of 2002. Considering that it came out so late, the graphics on this game are almost late NES type. That disappointed me, but considering I've only played one other Wonderswan Color game before (FF1) I don't know if this is the peak of their graphics or not. So I guess I can dismiss it considering the system.
The storyline starts out with Kagome going into the well and remembering the past.
Yes Kagome, we're wondering what's going on too.
Once the past starts (such as when she finds Inuyasha pinned to a tree) it's almost word-by-word directly taken from the manga/anime. Literally. If you've seen the anime you don't even have to know Japanese to know what they're saying. If you haven't, here's the basics: Kagome falls down the well (well, more like gets pulled in) and ends up in the Sengoku era of Japan. When she starts walking around she finds Inuyasha pinned to a tree by an arrow. He appears to be sleeping so she walks over to him and checks out his ears. Suddenly he wakes up and accuses her of being Kikyou and they argue over her name until the big worm that pulled her into the well comes back looking for more. It bites into her and steals the Shikon no Tama that was inside of her body.
Yikes. Where's the lotion when you need it?
Inuyasha yells at her to pull the arrow out so that he can defeat the demon, and she does so. And then he defeats it.
Inuyasha has lost it.
The storyline progresses more and Inuyasha gets his necklace that allows Kagome to yell "Osuwari" to cause him to come crashing down to the ground anytime she says it (even if she didn't mean to, which happens a few times ).
Osuwari!
Anyway, what's this game really about? I can't tell. I couldn't get past the flashbacks long enough to find out. It's basically flashback and after flashback after flashback. Eventually, though, you will be given a menu of things to do. One of the options is to return to Kagome's own time where you will get a second menu with lots of options.
Home sweet home.
Unfortunately, I somehow got stuck here. I wasn't able to return to the Sengoku era (every time I tried she failed to go through the well correctly) and the only other option I had was to turn the game off. Better luck next time.
Sound...well, considering I've only heard one song played over and over, it sort of sucks. I haven't gotten very far though (because I got stuck and will have to start over) so perhaps it gets better.
I don't think I'd recommend this game if you had to buy it or more than a dollar. If you own a Wonderswan Color and can find this game for really dirt cheap, get it for a few laughs. This opinion may change once I get unstuck and play it further, but at the moment I don't see the point. The GBA game is so much better (in terms of everything except perhaps the order and closeness of the storyline) so get that one instead.
