Well, I went and saw the new Halloween last night with a coworker of mine and one of her friend's.
Keeping in mind that I NEVER saw the original Halloween (indeed, any of them), I honestly don't have anything to compare it to. I thought that it wasn't all that bad, though. However, it was completely filled to the brim with 80's horror movie cliches. You know the ones: have sex and you're gonna get killed; you can run for hours ahead of the bad guy and he STILL somehow catches up to you (in fact, you're lucky that you're not chasing after him with how fast he can suddenly appear); the bad guy can somehow lift half a ton and smash through anything that appears before him as well as getting shot 7+ times and still not die; etc, etc, etc.
If you can get past the cliches, you get a pretty good glimpse into what might make a serial killer. It was also interesting that it was truer to life (I guess one could say). I mean, Michael is taken into prison but a psychologist tries to help him for years (as I imagine might happen irl with someone that young). Was this in the original? Again, I don't know since I never saw it.
A lot of people kept telling me that the people were "smart" in this movie in trying to avoid death. I disagree. I mean, c'mon. How can you not notice an 8 foot tall guy wearing a mask holding a knife? And when you DO notice him, how can you not immediately bolt in the opposite direction (though, even if they had, due to horror movie cliche they wouldn't have made it far before he caught up)? Some of the victims freakin walked into death. They deserved it.
Overall, it was an okay movie. I don't know if I'd rush to buy it when it comes out, but it was worth the price of admission to see it. I wish I had seen the original so I could compare it further but I'm sure someone like Andy will come along and do a better review.
Now I'm just waiting for Saw IV. >.>
