Superman returns, as does any hope for this series of films to continue! I'm afraid I'm not as good as Andy for reviewing things, but here's some good/bad. Of course, here ye be spoilers, so don't read this stuff if you haven't seen it yet.
GOOD:
+ The CGI is awesome, as to be expected
+ Brandon Routh (Superman) got a lot of the mannorisims down from Christopher Reeve's rendition, and actually looks a bit like him.
+ It takes place after the first two movies, thus movies 3 and 4 can go out the window (but did anyone watch those anyway?). This is a good thing.
+ IT'S FREAKIN' SUPERMAN!!!
+ Superman takes a bullet to the eye and it bounces off without him even so-much as blinking. Cool!
+ I liked Kevin Spacey's version of Lex, though I kind of miss Gene Hackman.
+ Not part of the actual movie, but SPIDER-MAN 3 TRAILER!! WOOHOOO!! VENOM!! DOUBLE WOOO! Okay, I saw this before but it's even better on the big screen.
BAD:
+ I thought Lex's whole plot was kind of lackluster. I don't know, I guess I'm not completely familiar with the comics so I don't know if this is right up his ally or not, but it was kind of like.. "whooptie doo" to me. However, using the Kryptonite with the crystal was cool and I liked that.
+ Metropolis has, once again, replaced NY city even though in the comic they both co-exist (though this was expected since it continues from the first two films).
+ I thought Clark wasn't geeky enough, though he definitely got Christopher Reeve's actions down good enough. Still, it wasn't fully convincing that Clark was a different guy, like he's supposed to be (you know what I mean).
+ Plot was kind of slow in some points that made you realize just how long this film was.
+ Well, maybe not "bad" per se, but Superman had a kid?! whaaaat?
DID YA CATCH:
+ They mention Gotham in a brief sentence as one of the cities that Superman visited/did something in on the news.
+ There were a ton of references to the first two Superman films (such as when he says "I hope this hasn't put you off flying. Statistically speaking, it is still the safest way to travel."). Wikipedia has a whole list of them towards the bottom of the Superman Returns page.
Overall, I liked it. People who are obsessed with comic books may not though. But in any case, EVERYONE can agree that it's way better than Superman III and IV. So go see it. And they have it in Imax with additional footage with 3d, so if you can see it in that.. do so (I wish I could).
I'll probably see it a second time with my dad, who hasn't seen it yet (I saw it with Sara and a few of her friends). Maybe I'll catch some more stuff the second run.
