I've just had my first true triumphant moment in FFXI. I was out practicing my new sword (which is a great sword, aka it's as big as I am, like Cloud's is ) trying to learn a new technique with it (you get the first one once you master level 10 with the weapon) and when I was finished I was on my way back to Bastock when I realized the way I had to go was blocked by two Quadav beastmen. If you don't know what they look like, they're basically big turtles. There's all sorts of different types and some of them cast spells. The two that were blocking the way were of the spell-casting variety. Here's a picture of me fighting a Young Quadav (a non-magic user) when I was like..level 4. So you know what they look like. Anyway, so yeah. They're easy when singled out but when they're together they can be a royal pain in the neck. There were two there, one Amber and one Amythesit (sp?). So I sat on a hill across from them to watch them and heal my HP back and was beginning to wonder if I was strong enough to take both of them on. 'The new sword I bought is really strong' I thought to myself, wondering if they were ever going to move. I was just about to charge them when suddenly another Amber Quadav spawned right near the other two. 'Well, forget that' I immedeately thought and turned around. I sat back down and watched them. I then thought I could lure them out one by one with an arrow (though in hindsight I realized that wouldn't have worked because they would have just casted spells on me from a distance, but at the time I thought it would have worked) and noticed I had 0 arrows left (which isn't such a bad thing, actually. I was trying to use up the rest of my lame wood arrows so I could start using bone). 'What to do?' I thought as I looked up and noticed that there were only two Quadavs there now. 'Now's my chance!' I rushed them, quickly. ......................... A second after I reached them I realized I had made a mistake. The 'missing' Quadav was actually standing in the same spot as another one, hiding basically, making it seem like there was only one standing there when in fact there were two. I had just rushed into battle with THREE of these things. I've NEVER taken on more than one at a time before. To make everything worse a Young Quadav spawned right behind me, making the total of four (and meaning I was surrounded). Oh boy. My technique points (kind of like your limit break bar) had gotten up to 100% so I used the first technique I learned with my new sword and killed one Quadav. One down, three to go. So far so good. I hadn't taken much damage even though I had two Quadavs casting spells on me and one slicing me open with a sword. I turned and must have done a critical hit because in one or two hits the thing fell dead. Two left. I went after the last spell caster and finished it just as fast as the previous. I was estatic when I ended up killing the last Quadav. I had just taken on FOUR of these beasts and lived to tell the tell. Not only that, I beat them BADLY. I beat them like they were tunnel worms or something (first basic enemy ). In short: I love my new sword. The bad: I couldn't get a pic of me fighting all of those things because I was too busy wondering if I was going to stay alive. That's a shame. I wish I could have made a movie of it happening or at least taken a few pics. The game needs 'instant replay' and an option to save it to disk or something. Anyway, I'll leave with a pic of me sitting in town (near the quest moogle) with the sword across my back. I didn't get a clear pic of it from behind so this will have to do for now.

Well, I figured out what I'm going for if I indeed do play this game. I'll go for a Dragoon class, buwaha. Then after I get strong enough, I'll go get the Samurai class, level it up some, then go with Dragoon/Samurai to kill stuff with ease. *evil grin here*
On the Worldpass, does it only affect the new character you make, or does it effect all chracters? (Just curious so it doesn't move Brandon's character. Also, I'm not sure if I will have a choice if I have my character under his account).

(Just curious so it doesn't move Brandon's character. Also, I'm not sure if I will have a choice if I have my character under his account). It should (I'm like 90% certain) only affect YOUR character. Basically when you create a new character you go through the process of picking out what you think he/she should look like (face, hair, height) then it'll say something like "World" and it'll be blank. You can then type in "Asura" and then it'll ask for a #, which is the worldpass #. Once you put that in you'll start the game on Asura. If you don't put anything in then you'll be put on a random server. I'm pretty sure that you'll be given a choice since it's part of the character creation process. I mean, if it doesn't that means it creates the character for you. That combination sounds evil...especially the fact you can use the super leap to get rid of all the hate on your char. That's gonna suck for the rest of us.

Ah, okay. I was just wondering cause I think he will stay on the same server if he can (since that's the server he knows people). Hm, yeah, that would suck if all that hate caused by a double Penta Thrust went towards the rest of the party as soon as I Super Jump into the air. Guess we'll see if the time comes.

When he recreates his character you should watch it so you can see how to do the worldpass thing so you don't end up accidently create your char and have to re-do everything again (like I did, lol). Although you've already got an edge since I told ya. (I didn't know that you had to type the name in first before you put in the #) Quadavs don't like me anymore. I'm not getting very many items from them or much xp anymore to make it worth the effort. :\

Guess you should go after other enemies then.

Well, it's been awhile since I last posted about my expeirences in the game so I figured I'd go ahead and update everyone on how it's going. Let me first start out by saying I have some of the worst luck ever.. and you'll probably see that as you read on. Oh yeah, as usual, some of these posts will be rather long and I'll try to include a few pictures. The fun that was FFXI has dramatically dropped. It's not really "fun" so much as it is "work." It's hard as hfil to level up even one time now. For example, I died once two days ago when I was 1/2 way to level 18 and lost 1500 xp. Okay, I thought, I'll just get it back tomorrow (which was yesterday). So yesterday I played for two hours and partied the entire time. I got back to 1/2 way again and then died. Grrr. I got raised though so it wasn't as bad as last time but when I got back to the 1/2 way point yet again, our idiot puller (the guy pulling monsters to a base camp so that we don't get surrounded by powerful monsters, for those who don't know) was pulling things too fast and not giving us time to heal so, guess what, I DIED AGAIN!! We immedately booted the puller (for being a complete idiot) but by the time I was raised and back to my full HP I was lagging to death and couldn't even move (I really hate that). Once I pinged out I just stayed off since I had to go get ready for class anyway. After class I got back on. After seven hours of playing I had achieved level 19 but have not gotten a subjob yet. Those who don't know, subjobs allow you to have two classes that stack together. For example, you could be a warrior with a white mage subjob, so you could still be a powerful attacker but would be able to use (a little) healing magic. Or you could be a white mage with a black mage subjob, allowing you to cast both types of magics. See why it's good to have a subjob? To get a subjob you have to do one quest that makes you get three items, one of which is a magicked skull only dropped by Ghouls. In the dunes, where I was leveling up, ghouls only appear late at night and only 4 of them spawn (appear) a day...so you can see why it's rather hard to get one. After about 5 1/2 of those 7 hours we finally found a ghoul that dropped the bloody skull I needed (no pun intended) and I finally got it. The bad thing is, the other two parts I need are in Bastock. That's a long run back and then back to Selbina. We had an awesome party for most of that time. I met a nice Japanese woman who didn't speak any English and was very silent, save for what little I could converse with her. I realized how very little Japanese I know. One of the first things she asked me was mada ite iidesuka? and I had to respond with the fact that I didn't know what she was asking. I really enjoy Japanese and the Japanese players are some of the nicest people I've ever met, but I hate not being able to talk to them. I felt bad for her, I really did. She stayed with us until I left (and possibly after I did, I don't know) and the entire time I was thinking she must be really bored. I was the only one of the group who knew any Japanese and my knowledge is, as I've said, very little. I hope I can improve and converse with her better. I did ask her if I could add her to my friend list (though I didn't know how to ask it in Japanese so I just used the auto translater) and she accepted. I hope one day that I can talk to her as I would with you or any of my friends. More to come in next post.

When I woke up this morning I was pysched because I knew I could finally unlock the subjobs. So first thing I did was RUN BACK TO BASTOCK (took 45 min or so) to pickup the items. I then spent 750 conquest points (which you get for fighting monsters with your Signet on) on a 'warp scroll.' Because my save point was still at the dunes I could just warp there and save myself a 45 min run back. Whoosh! I was there. I turned in the items one by one and boom, I could now use subjobs. Now, to actually equip a subjob, I had to run back to Bastock............again. So I did. Ugh. Long run. After equipping the subjob (Monk, in my case) I spent 15,000 gil (out of my 16,000) on three new pieces of equipment. My defense went up quite a bit (my defense now is higher than it was last night with the spell "protect" casted on me, so that's very good). My stats went up quite a bit from equipping the monk as my subjob, though I NEED to work on it (get it to level 10 at least). I've taken a pic of all I'm wearing, my stats, and what my attack/defense is. Figuring that it was enough for awhile (after all, I did have to run back to Bastock twice..so that's a 45 min run done twice) I logged off for awhile. (More to come next post)

And now for today's story (which is a little more interesting than the past few posts, lol). I wanted to try giving fishing a shot because I was tired of leveling up so I figured I'd try it yet again. I had tried it twice and had spent over 4,000 gil before I even decided it today. So I dished out another 4,000 gil for a carbon rod (which everything I've been reading says is perfect for the little moat of Bastock). First cast, SNAP, it broke. I lost the 4,000 rod in one cast. Frustrated as hfil, I messaged Glenn to ask how to get to Windurst so I could just go to the fishing guild and try to figure out something else. He informed me I had to take the boat from Selbina and then run the rest of the way once I was on the other side. Fine. He said that the boat ride was painless though it took a bit of time. Also fine. I went to Selbina, paid the fare and waited. Finally the boat arrived and I boared. "This is kind of cool" I thought. I had never even thought about riding the boat before because I had heard stories of it being attacked by pirates. "Don't worry," Glenn told me, "it rarely happens and if it does happen just stay below deck and you'll be safe." Good. Boy this couldn't be further from the truth. Finally the boat departed and I saw the neat little FMV of it sailing away. All right, fine. The doors opened so we could explore the boat and I figured I'd take once glimpse of the top deck and then return to the bottom deck to stay out of the way and to stay safe. So I rounded the corner. This is what I was greeted with when I ran out the door. I didn't even have time to go "what the hfil?" It slapped me for over 400 damage and I deleveled. But right before my body collapsed I managed to take a pic. To make matters worse, my network dropped to 0% and I pinged out. I logged back on and managed to get someone to raise me, though I don't understand WHY I was allowing myself to be raised since the freakin monster was still there. For those who can't tell by the pic (it wasn't that great of a pic, I admit) that was the level 60~65 NM monster "Sea Horror," one of the most feared sea monsters in the game (or at least on Asura). No one on the boat stood a chance (everyone was level 18 to 22, save for one white mage who was level 30 I believe). I got raised just in time for me to ping out again (literally, I hit the "accept" button and then pinged out). I decided, since if I died again I might further decrease in level, that I should just stay off for about 15 minutes. And it worked out. But that's not the point. I lost a level on a "safe" voyage to go fish. Oh yeah, and by the way, when I got to Windurst the place was closed so I couldn't do anything anyway (then I pinged out again, and this time I just stayed off). Sometimes I wonder if that game hates me.#nosmileys

None of this sounds fun to me. I even tried to get into other games of this style (well to some extent, Morrowind.) eegads, it just drove me freaking nuts. I thought I liked Rpgs, but apparentally I don't. (unless its single player FF's, Lunar, Chrono Trigger or something) MMORPG's just don't appeal to me at all. Something like dying and losing all my progress for an entire day is enough to make me never play the stupid game again, and it sounds like that happens frequently in FFXI. So, I'll just be waiting patiently for FFXII which isn't online. (and if it is, well I guess Im just quitting the FF series alltogether. argh.)
