I got this game for Christmas. I've finished it a few weeks ago with 100% items and 100% scans, I just need to go through Hard mode now. If you know me, then you know how much I enjoy playing the Metroid games.
Basically, some time ago, a meteor crashed into the planet of Aether creating a seperate dimension. Said dimension is a dark and evil version of Aether. The meteor also created the Ing and for the last 80 years or so, the Ing and Luminoth have been at war with each other, but the Luminoth are on the verge of losing. So, you as Samus Aran, the one-woman army (or so it would seem) basically gets to save the planet.
The graphics on the game are about the same as on Metroid Prime, but looks slightly better. A lot of the areas are wide open and are much bigger than the ones on the first game. Samus' design is the same, but the shoulder pads are smaller than what they were in MP1. The other suits you get are pretty much original, and ther designs are pretty cool. At least you don't have to get the Varia and Gravity Suits again like you do in basically all of the games (though you do have the Fusion Suit in Metroid Fusion, you still collect the Varia and Gravity Suits). Also, the HUD is easier to see and such (Energy and ammo have larger text than it did on MP1).
The sound effects and such are nice, though probably about the same if you've played the previous game. The music is alright, though could have been better. Also nice to hear some of the older music too (One of the areas has a little of the Maridia music from Super Metroid. Some of the rooms where you get items has part of the old item room music as well. I believe the escape music is in it as well, but I'm not certain yet).
Controls/gameplay is basically the same in MP1, though with a few changes. It's easier to know what items can be scanned and such. Mission related items are red in color, and other things are blue in color. Once you scan either one, it'll turn green usually. I don't know if it's me or not, but it seem like it's harder to lock onto enemies in this game. The beam ammo system is nice, though seems like you run out too fast (or unless I was just using it too much). Well, a good thing about it in a way is that it keeps you from using the best weapon for basically everything, though that's where most of the challenge of the game comes from. To me, this game is like playing MP1 on Hard mode. I'm not complaining too much though, better than it being too easy. A few bosses/enemies annoyed me though, but nothing too major.
There is multiplayer in the game, but it's really not done too well. Only a few weapons and suit upgrades you can use, only have 99 energy, about six stages and nothing really you can customize. There is only two modes of play, Deathmatch and Bounty (Think SSBM on that). Basically it's just about who can get the best weapon (Super Missile, Power Bomb and the Annihilator Beam makes it way too easy to kill your opponent). I think it would have been better if they put the multiplayer on a second disc and put more work into it. Oh well.
Overall it's about the same as MP1, there are certain enemies that are similiar to ones from MP1. Multiplayer could have been done better though. But if you're a Metroid fan, you should get it. It's a fun game to play.
