Boxset #1: Rurouni Kenshin Wandering Samurai
Boxset #2: Rurouni Kenshin Legend of Kyoto
Boxset #3: Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Era

There's also a box set for the OAVs under the *shudder* "Samurai X" name.

Samurai X - OVA Collection

Nice thing about the ovas tho, is that they have Reversible covers, so you can flip it over and it will say Ruroni Kenshin instead of crappy Samurai X.

Also, be thankful they got the same voice actors in the Ovas and the Series.. cause that could have been a real problem! (luckily the crap licensing only held up the title)

Yeah, the reversible covers were a really nice touch. I wish all of the Kenshin DVDs did that. I should add that to the FAQ some day so that it gets out into the general public knowledge (as it stands I don't know of many people who actually know they're reversible).

You can most likely tell with ease since if it has a reversible cover, the case itself will be clear (Plus you can see the other side when you open it).

Guess what! It's a new version.

Version 2.0.3 is now up. I can't believe I got away with these mistakes I've caught tonight (for example RK was published in Shuukan Shonen JUMP NOT Shuukan Shonen Sunday as I had in previous versions).

With a number of mistakes caught/fixed, a new question added (giving a more indepth look into what the Kenshin Kaden really is) and some more tidbit information added (such as Kenshin used to air at 7:30 P.M. on Thursdays and a small bit of info on Watsuki) I HIGHLY recommend getting this new version (I know I say that every time, but this one is a must).

Enjoy!

Well, version 2.0.4 is now up and ready for download. I fixed the typos, found out that Soujirou used the sword "Kikuichimonji-norimune" in addition to "Nagasone Kotetsue" and also mentioned that ep 95 and the Memorial Box ep aren't the same. Until I know exactly what's what and how to find both of these eps, I won't actually include them in the actual information (I'll keep it in the "new questions" section for now).

Hello. New here.
I had my doubts about your page "The Viz Mistake (http://iyouboushi.netfirms.com/rk/vizmistake.html)," so I had to get it checked out!

I asked my fellow Daizenshuu EX (http://db.schuby.org/daizex/index.php) member "Daimao (http://db.schuby.org/daizex/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=43)" to see what he had to say.

Daimao is also known as Steven Simmons, translator for FUNimation's Japanese subtitle tracks on their DVDs. To say the least, he knows a lot of Japanese!

Here's our PM exchange:

"[...] http://img240.echo.cx/img240/5465/52ub.png

I was on this website that was talking about VIZ's mistranslations, and they said VIZ's line (from the above image), "After all, Shishio mustn't be left as the Only Hiten Mitsurugi Student," is incorrect.
So, what's your call? How would you translate the line?"-Me

"Actually [...], the translation seems pretty dead-on. I might quibble over saying 'swordsman" or "fencer" instead of "student," but the rest of it seemed pretty accurate. He's saying "Shishio can't very well be left alone as the only Hiten Mitsurugi swordsman.'"-Mr. Simmons

I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you contacted him to make sure :P

Hmm. That's kind of odd.

I asked a native speaker to confirm or deny what my translation said. Here's the conversation (Japanese encoding recommended):

Myself:

[. . .]
The original was: 何だかんだいって飛天御剣流の剣客として志々雄を放っておくわけにはいかんだろう
Viz translated it as: After all, Shishio mustn't be left as the Only Hiten Mitsurugi Student.

But anyone who has read/watched Kenshin knows that Shishio never learned HMR, nor was a student of Hiko.

I tried to translate it myself but I was wondering if you could tell me if I was right or wrong about it..

Native Speaker:

I would read it as "One way or another, as a swordsman of the Hiten Mitsurugi style there is no way that I/we can leave Shishio alone."

The particle を is indicating that "Shishio" is the direct object, not the subject (as he is in Viz's translation.) The として is refering to the speaker, not Shishio (unless Shishio is refering to himself in the third person -- though that would make the whole sentence a little odd.)

放っておく has more of a feeling of "to leave something alone". The verb has more to do with setting something free than it does for leaving something behind. For that kind of a situation 残る would be a more likely verb to use.

If you would, pass this on and see what the other guy thinks. This translation, though, seems to be more accurate than saying that Shishio is a member of HMR, which he isn't.
